Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship 2022: Last Saturday, August 20th 2022 Na Gaeil hosted Spa in Round 3 of the senior club championship knowing that a win would put them through to a county semi-final. Na Gaeil played against the breeze in the first half but started well with 2 frees converted by Diarmuid O’Connor.

Spa added 2 frees of their own to level the game after 10 minutes. They then added 2 more frees before Diarmuid O’Connor got Na Gaeils 3rd point, again from a free, to leave the score 4-3 in favour of the visitors.

Two more frees from Diarmuid O’Connor put us ahead 5 points to 4 and it got even better for Na Gaeil when Jack Sheehan and Dan Goggin added points of their own to stretch our lead to 3 points. Spa added another free in injury time to cut the gap to 2 points at halftime.

Spa were quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half and added 2 points from David Spillane to level the game. Soon afterwards Jack Bourke hit back with a point to put Na Gaeil ahead for what proved to be the last time in the game. Spa then took over, adding 7 points without reply in a 15 minute spell to put them out of reach and from there the result was never in doubt.

With just 8 minutes to go Darragh Reen added a point from play and this was followed by a point from Andrew Barry to briefly cut the margin to 4 points but Spa added 2 points of their own. Diarmuid O’Connor converted his 6th free of the evening before Spa struck for the only goal of the game in injury time.

Diarmuid O’Connor had the last score of the evening with yet another free but Spa ran out comfortable winners in the end on a scoreline of Na Gaeil 0-12, Spa 1-16. Despite losing the game our boys and management will be delighted to have preserved their senior club status for next year.

Also it was great to see Andrew Barry back after a long layoff.

Rose Cup: The Rose Cup took place in Killeen last Saturday after being absent since 2019 due to Covid. It was a welcome sight to see eight teams taking part in Na Gaeil and eight teams taking part in Kerins O Rahillys. Na Gaeil had the honour of hosting the Cup and Shield finals also. In our group were Listowel Emmet’s, Austin Stacks and Killarney Legion and we had three great games.

There was nothing between the teams and we came up short by two points to Listowel Emmet’s. We had a great game against Austin Stacks which ended in a draw and we conceded a late goal against Legion which meant them winning by same. However, Na Gaeil had twenty lads involved on the day who all got to play a minimum of half a game each. Every player was outstanding and it was tremendous to see how hard our boys tried in every game and were really unlucky not to get out of a tough group.

All the games were played in a real sporting fashion and we would like to thank all the teams in our group for this but also to all teams as the day was a great occasion. Congratulations to John Mitchels for winning out the Cup and congratulations to Douglas for winning out the Shield. We would also like to thank all the referees and the Town board for running a great competition and the Bons Secours for sponsoring same.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents and volunteers in Na Gaeil who had two great fields set up and also provided fabulous complimentary food and teas and coffees all day. The Rose Cup was a great day in Na Gaeil and we were delighted to have it back running again.

U9 boys: The under 9 boys hosted Dingle on Sunday morning in Killeen. We fielded 3 teams and had 3 matches. All boys got stuck in and we look forward to returning the fixture next Sunday in Dingle.

U11 boys: Another great session last Sunday morning. We mainly concentrated on maintaining possession while in the tackle and protecting the ball which lads did very well. We will be away to Laune Rangers this Thursday at 7pm.

U15 boys: Well done to the Na Gaeil lads who are part of the St Brendans Board U15 team who beat Mid Kerry in Blennerville last Wednesday in round 2 of the U15 County Championship shield competition. Those lads are Jamie Schoenmaker, Ruadhan Clifford, Conor Lucey, Jeaic Canty, Liam Cooper, Paddy McElligott, Brian Heaphy and Cillian Griffin. They have now qualified for the semi-final where they will take on West Kerry next Wednesday, 24th, in Blennerville at 6.45pm.

Tralee Parnells: Congratulations to Tralee Parnells u15 team, particularly the 7 Na Gaeil boys involved, who last Sunday added the Division 1 County League title to their County Féile title when once again getting the better of Ballyduff in a titanic battle. Our lads involved were Jeaic Canty, Liam Cooper, Ryan Sheehy, Brian Reidy, William Somers, Karl Cronin & Cathal Fitzgerald.
