Skellig Rangers made the long trip north to face Na Gaeil in Tralee in round nine of the Co. League.  With both teams vying for promotion,  Skellig opted to play with the aid of the strong breeze in the first half, and reaped the early rewards with three early points, two coming through frees.

Dara Carmody who finished Na Gaeil top scorer for the day, opened up the home sides account with a converted free after seamie O’Neill was adjudged to have been fouled twenty meters out.

After Eoin O’Neill registered Na Gaeil’s second point , Skellig responded immediately through a penalty after the referee was left with little option but to point to the spot, after a Skellig forward was brought to ground.

The resulting penalty was coolly dispatched, followed by two quick frees saw the visitors going into the dressing rooms at half time 01:05 to Na Gaeil 00:03, with Dara Carmody scoring his second point just before the break.

A much improved Na Gaeil side used the breeze to full advantage in the second half with long direct balls into the full forward line, with Dara Carmody causing havoc any time he got on the ball, with the home side registering 02:08 without reply in the opening twenty minutes.

Dan O’Connor  opened up the home sides scoring with a long range effort before Dara Carmody, Eoin Walsh and Dylan Seymour reeled in Skellig’s first half lead.

Two goals in as many minutes, mid-way through the half, coming from Diarmaid Herlihy and a converted penalty from Dara Carmody ensured the two vital points for Na Gaeil, but to the credit to Skellig who battled to the end with three further points, which could have been more except for a few wides throughout the second half. Na Gaeil’s 100% record remaining intact, on a score line of Na Gaeil 02:13 Skellig Rangers 01:08.

U 14

Na Gaeil U 14’s travelled to Killorglin last Monday evening to play Laune Rangers in round seven of the Central Region league. Na Gaeil started brightly and after ten minutes led by 1-2 to 0-1.

The home side soon got into the game and scored a goal and a point to draw level before Na Gaeil got their second goal of the half to regain the lead on fifteen minutes.  The lead was further extended when Na Gaeil scored another two goals and two points without reply and at this stage looked like they were in control of the game.

However, Laune Rangers refused to give up and got the next two scores to leave seven points between the sides. Na Gaeil struck back with their fifth goal of the half, but again the Killorglin side struck back with another goal and a point. Na Gaeil got the final two score of a high scoring and entertaining first half to leave the score at the interval Na Gaeil 5-6, Laune Rangers 3-4.

Laune Rangers were quick of the mark in the second half scoring a goal in the opening minute, however Na Gaeil were soon back in control and scored two goals and a point to extend their lead. Laune Rangers struck back with two points and a goal and two points from both sides left the score Na Gaeil 8-9, Laune Rangers 5-8 after fifteen minutes of the second half.

As the game entered the final quarter, Na Gaeil began to tire in the warm conditions and Laune Rangers began to win more possession and dominate the game. They made full use of their possession and began to reduce the deficit.

As the game entered the final minutes it was anybody’s game, but Na Gaeil did enough to hold on with the final score Na Gaeil 8-11, Laune Rangers 6-15.

The win meant Na Gaeil finished top of division one of the Central Region League and have a home semi-final v Austin Stacks on Monday evening. This will be another hard game as we drew with Stacks in round six of the league and are expecting another close encounter in the knock out stage.

U 13 Girls

Na Gaeil v Firies U13 Championship

We played at home on Tuesday night to Firies in the U13 Championship. Firies started brightly scoring an early goal. We came back at them with scores from Muire, Sarah and Freya.

Despite some fine defending from Megan Fernane, Megan Lynch and Eimear O Sullivan, Firies squeezed off 2 more goals before half time, We regrouped at half time with Adelina,Kayleigh Murphy, Grace, Cara, Caoilinn O Brien and Ailbhe defending well in the  backs.

This gave Freya and Sarah the chance to get forward and help our forwards to get us back in the game, Firies were now defending with their backs to the wall, Siena got pulled down in the box, which she got up and buried the penalty into the corner,

Game on, Kayleigh Costello popped over a point followed by another one from Sarah and Muire. Firies were quick on the counter and got themselves another few scores despite some fine saves from Clodagh.

With minutes to go, down by 4 points with some good play from Emma, she found Sarah who drove through and found the net. Unfortunately, we ran out of time losing by a point. A good experience for a very young team.

Mna Na Gaeil Munster 2016

Mna Na Gaeil who went to the Munster blitz on Saturday.

Game 1 – Mna Na Gaeil v Quarry Blues, this was our 3rd meeting with the team from Lissarda in Cork.

There was still a small bit of nerves, Blues got the 1st goal despite a good save from Noelle, but due to some great defending from Deirdre and Janice, they didnt score anymore in this game with points coming from Susan, Melissa(2) in the 1st half.

Caroline found Mary who scored a point from long range followed by a cool taken point from Siobhan. Debra found the back of the net with a few minutes to go to seal our 1st win.

Game 2 – v Cloyne, Cork.

This was a tough game which we found hard to break down their Defence. Agnes, Deirdre and Cait were winning great ball in the backs allowing our other players to attack more.

Helen got our 1st goal from longe range followed by a point from Yvonne and Susan. Caroine was on the ball a lot in the 2nd half but had no luck as she hit the crossbar twice and the upright. Heather also had a chance but some some fine defending stopped her from scoring. We got our 2nd win.

Game 3 v St Brigids, Limerick.

This was our toughest game of the day. St Brigids were strong and got off to a great start scoring 2 early goals. Janice had a couple of shots at goals but were well saved. Helen got us a goal before half time to keep us in the game. We re grouped for the 2nd half and with 3 long range points from Susan, we pulled ourselves level.

Alas, St Brigids got themselves another goal. Yvonne replied back with a point. With Minutes to go in the game, Melissa won us a penalty which she buried into the back of the net, which enabled for us to win by a point.

Game 4 v Knochainey, Limerick.

Our last game was against Knockainey from Limerick. Both teams were looking for the win to go home undefeated. We started brightly with Amy creating the 1st chance which just sailed wide. Hannah and Susan were feeding the forwards with some great ball.

Heather found Sharon in the box , which Sharon fisted into the net. Deirdre,Agnes, Cait and Janice didnt let any player past them in the 1st half with Melissa and Debra winning the balls that came their way.

We made changes at half time with Helen and Caroline coming into midfield. Cait and Siobhan came into the backs and were relentless in the marking of their players. Mary  and Yvonne came into the forwards with Yvonne scoring 2 points after some fine teamplay.

Noelle was driving the ball forward with her long kickouts. Susan got another point with Caroline being thwarted by the cross bar yet again. We won our 4 games and had a brilliant day up there which was followed by a great night of music, dance and a few beverages in the Clubhouse.

A huge Thank to our supporters that followed and to assistant coach Siena Lucey.
