Seniors   Na Gaeil hosted Fossa in the final round of the County League in Killeen on Sunday last.

This game was a final for Fossa because if they won they would go up to Division Three as champions. Fossa started brightly and had the lion’s share of possession but failed to convert this into scores.

They registered three wides before their goalkeeper Colin Myers opened the scoring with a well struck 45 in the 8th minute. Darragh Carmody fired over the next three points for Na Gaeil, a pointed free, a 45 and one from play to leave the score 3 points to 1 in favour of Na Gaeil at the quarter hour mark. Na Gaeil dominated the next 15 minutes of the first half.

Diarmaid Herlihy fisted over the bar on 20 minutes and then Na Gaeil scored two goals in quick succession through Shamie O’Neill and Jamie Lowham. Darragh Carmody finished off the first half scoring with a pointed free for Na Gaeil on 30 minutes to leave the half time score Na Gaeil 2-05: Fossa 0-1

Na Gaeil was first off the mark in the 2nd half with Andrew Barry winning the throw in and cutting through the middle to fire over a great point. Na Gaeil scored the next 4 points through Darragh Carmody, Shane Carey and two from Diarmaid Herlihy to leave the score Na Gaeil 2-10 Fossa 0-1 after 7 minutes of the 2nd half.

Fossa began to come more into the game at this stage and reduced the deficit with Daniel O’Keeffe, Domhnaill O’Sullivan and Tadhg O’Shea scoring 3 good points. But Na Gaeil immediately replied with a well taken goal from substitute Jack Carmody on 17 minutes to end any hopes of a Fossa comeback.

Scores were hard to come by for the remainder of the half and the last point of the game was scored by Na Gaeil’s impressive full back Kieran Dineen when he made a foray up the field and fired over from 40 metres out. Final score Na Gaeil3-11: Fossa 0-4.

It was a good win for Na Gaeil but Fossa were short a few regulars on the day which did not help their cause. Both teams have finished level on 20 points each and will have another day out to decide what team goes up to Division Three as champions.

Na Gaeil’s defence played well as a unit with the evergreen Colm Lyons very impressive at no. 2 and Eogain Sheehy at no. 7. Dan O’Connor and Andrew Barry held their own for Na Gaeil in the middle of the park while up front Jamie Lowham, Darragh Carmody Shane Carey and Diarmaid Herlihy impressed.

For Fossa Shane Malone and Daniel O’Keeffe played well in defence, Matt Rennie was impressive in midfield and in the forwards Domhnaill O ‘Sullivan and Tadhg O’Shea tried hard to break down the Na Gaeil defence.

Na Gaeil: Timmy Culloty, Colm Lyons, Kieran Dineen (0-1), Dylan Brazil, Eoin O’Neill, David Culloty, Eoghain Sheehy, Andrew Barry (0-1), Dan O’Connor, Jamie Lowham (1-0), Shane Carey (0-1), Shamie O’Neill (1-0), Darragh Carmody (0-5), Mike Griffin, Diarmaid Herlihy (0-3).

Na Gaeil Ladies   Na Gaeil v Spa/Rathmore in the Senior B County Championship Final.

We made History last Friday night as we played in our 1st Championship Final as a Senior Club on our own. We played against a very experienced Spa/Rathmore side who boasted an array of current and former Kerry Players.

Spa/Rathmore started the stronger scoring 3 early points. We were getting the ball forward but nerves were with us as we were trying to get our scores. We had Susan blocking runs from their full forward with Kim and Sheilah doing a fine job marking the Rathmore twins trying to keep them away from our goalmouth but when Laura was called into action, she made a great save.

Nora made a fine drive forward and got us our 1st point. We were starting to settle and controlling the ball a bit  better. Sibeal and Ayesha got another couple of points just before half time. Spa/Rathmore again started the stronger in the 2nd half scoring 2 early goals and 4 points. We re-settled and came back at them, holding more possession with Meagan in the centre making passes and putting Kerry Captain Aislinn Desmond under pressure.

Brid, Sarah and Kate Anne were keeping tight to their players as we were driving forward. Eilis was making space and got herself a point. Blaithnaid found Sibeal with a pass for another point for her. Caoimhe got a long distance point after good work from Nora.

Clodagh Mc Hugh came into the side and helped Jadyn scored another point.  Martina found Ayesha in the box for Ayesha to hit the back of the net for a goal. Aimee came into the defence to give Sheliah a break after her hard work.

We put in a gallant display of football but the experience told in the end as Spa/Rathmore were clinical in front of the uprights whenever they got a chance. Our young Team played well after we got rid of the nervousness and can be proud of the way they performed and played.

Mná Na Gaeil v Quarry Blues. Mothers and Others Challenge Game

We played Quarry Blues from Kilmurry, Co. Cork on Saturday evening in Na Gaeil as we are both preparing for the upcoming All Ireland Blitz in Portmarnock on October the 15th. Blues got the 1st goal which was aided by a strong wind which gave Anna no chance in goals.

Blues followed this with another point before Yvonne scored a great point into the breeze from 25 yards. Siobhan, Deirdre, Cait and Blaithnaid stopped all ball getting nears the goals after Blues first 2 scores. Mags was working hard in midfield alongside Yvonne and Amy.

With the 1st quarter played against the wind, our forwards Mary, Heather, Sharon and Debra found it tough to find the ball. We came out in the 2nd quarter and Yvonne got us off to a great start scoring a goal and a point.

Mags was having shots for points but was marked tightly in midfield. Helen Cooper and Brid came into the backs alongside Susan and were now feeding the forwards as we took advantage of the wind with Helen and Heather getting chances. We were back level going into the 3rd quarter and into the wind but we used the ball wisely with Agnes getting the ball into Sharon who left it off to Debra to score a point and give us the lead.

We came out in the last quarter confident  with the wind at our backs and used it well with Deirdre and Susan hitting early ball into our forwards with Janice and Brid each scoring a point.

Amy found Heather with a pass who laid it to Helen who then got it to Susan for a great team goal. Yvonne scored another point with Mary making it hard for the Blues defence to get the ball out. Mags had a running battle with one of the Blues midfielders as we were trying to hold onto our lead. Quarry Blues scored a late goal deep into injury time but we held onto win by 2.06 to 1.03 in very windy conditions.

A huge thanks to Caroline and Mellissa who were team tacticans for the day and to Noelle our Maor Uisce. Thanks also to Sean and Staff and to Brian for the video of the game. Congratulations to Morgan Sheehy who won the raffle for the signed Kerry Jersey in aid of our trip to Portmarnock.
