Junior Football Final Replay     Na Gaeil played Glenbeigh/Glencar in the Premier Junior Football Final replay in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Na Gaeil started brightly and had a few early attempts for scores but failed to take them. Glenbeigh/Glencar then took control for the next twelve minutes of the half and scored 1-05 without reply.

This left a mountain to climb for Na Gaeil. Their cause was not helped when Eoghain Sheehy had to retire injured after just 12 minutes of the half. Their first scores came courtesy of two pointed frees from Darragh Carmody in the 13th and 14th minutes.

Glenbeigh/Glencar scored three further points before Jack Barry had a good point from play. Eoin O’Neill was black carded on 18 minutes to add further to Na Gaeil’s woes. Gavin O’Grady put over two for Glenbeigh/Glencar and the hard working Ian McCarthy finished the first half scoring with two excellent points from play for Na Gaeil. Half time score Na Gaeil 0-5 Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-10.

Darragh Carmody opened the 2nd half scoring with a pointed free for Na Gaeil after five minutes. Gavin O’Grady and Dan O’Connor exchanged points. Gavin O’Grady kicked another one and then the in-form Ian McCarthy kicked over two beauties for Na Gaeil to leave the score Na Gaeil 0-9 Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-12 after 15 minutes of the 2nd half.

Gavin O’Grady added two further points for his team and Darragh Carmody converted another free on 22 minutes. Try as they might Na Gaeil could not narrow the gap. Darragh Carmody and Darran O’Sullivan exchanged points. Mike Griffin scored on 29 minutes and Gavin O’Grady scored the final point of the half. Final score Na Gaeil 0-12 Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-16.

It was not Na Gaeil’s day but every player and the subs that came on gave it their all on the pitch. Each and every one of them can be proud of their performance.

It has been a great year for the senior team, gaining promotion to division 3 of the County League and playing in a Junior County Final and replay. The experience that they have gained this year will stand them in good stead for the 2017 season.

Great credit must go to their management team of Donie Rooney, Richie Barrett, John Barry and Niall O’Meara who have done an excellent job throughout the year. The amount of time and effort they have put into this team is immense and for that we are extremely grateful to them.

We say a big thank you to all our loyal supporters who travelled to Killarney today in such big numbers to cheer on the team today and turned up in the clubhouse later in the evening. It is much appreciated.

To the women of Na Gaeil who cooked and served the food to the players in the clubhouse and to the bar staff we also extend a big thank you.

Finally Na Gaeil Club heartily congratulate Glenbeigh/ Glencar on their great victory.  They were the better team overall on the day and thoroughly deserved their win. They have had their share of heartache over the past few years but it has finally come to an end.  We wish them all the best in their upcoming Munster and All Ireland campaign.
