MNA NA GAEIL:

Mna Na Gaeil v Kerry Garda Ladies, Carmel O Connor Memorial Shield.

We played our first game as a team against Kerry Garda Ladies in a charity game in aid of Kerry Palliative Care in Killeen on Saturday.

We had huge support from the sideline with friends and family there. We were missing a few players with Caroline, Agnes, Cait and Fiona not being able to make it.

Anna and Noelle who were both out injured helped us on the sideline. Brid started in goals with Rosemarie, Joan and Siobhan in the full back line having to work very hard to try and halt their attacks early on, with the Garda ladies getting a couple of early goals.

Blaithnaid, Sorcha, Susan, Mary O Connor and Liz in the half back line were working hard trying to get control of the ball, Marguerite and Rosalind were doing a lot of running and having to do a lot of tackling in midfield.

Melissa, Denise, Mary Ross and Amy were back trying to help midfield in the early stages. Mary Sheehy , Maeve and Sharon were being marked tightly in the full forward line.

It took us a while to try and get used to the style of play and the first half was over very quickly. We gathered ourselves at half time and managed to dominate possession, Helen and Heather went into the full forward line and started to cause trouble.

Joan was excelling at full back with Sandra and Tracey making it tougher for the Garda to get through. Catherine went into goals and did very well there.

Brenda and Mairead were hustling and allowing Susan to be able to carry the ball forward and cause trouble. Liz and Deirdre were working the wings well, and with our forwards making some good runs, this enabled us to win a penalty which Susan despatched into the top corner.

Susan followed this up with another couple of points with Melissa scoring a fine point as well. Brid helped out in midfield and made some great catches which allowed Mags and Rosalind to get forward.

Unfortunately due to the good start that the Garda Ladies got, we ran out of time and lost by a scoreline of 3.03 to 1.04.

We had a great game once we got used to the pace. This was the girls first game and did really  well as the game went on. It’s very hard to pick out any particular player as everyone on the field gave 110%  and played in a great spirit, so well done to the team and thanks to everyone who supported Kerry Palliative Care on the day.

Thanks must go to Sean and Jackie for food after the game, Johnny for the pitch and cameraman Brian. Thanks to Seamus Moriarty and Liz Twomey for organising the game for such a great cause.
