Dave Elton Programme Facilitator said; “Participants can choose to enjoy a scenic cycle out to Tralee bay along the Tralee-Blennerville Canal Path or pending the confidence levels can cycle around the quiet country lanes close to Tralee town centre. An option of a lovely snack to go is available which can turn a relaxed cycle into a mini picnic.”

Córa Carrigg, Co-ordinator with Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership said; “the concept of the programme is to provide an active social setting for our older adults as well as the opportunity to rediscover cycling in a very affordable, accessible and social way.”

A total of six bikes were purchased so individuals, couples or groups of 6 can hire the bikes any weekday morning or early afternoon.  Several attractive route ideas are included in the booking or alternatively the option of a guided tour is available with advance booking notice.

All bookings are made through Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre via telephone 066 7126700 or email info@traleebaywetlands.org

The Rediscover Cycling programme is a collaborative initiative.  Córa said “this programme is only made possible through partnering, where all partners involved added value to the initiative.”

She acknowledged Tralee Bay Wetlands for facilitating the bike hire, Ballyseedy Café for the provision of the snacks to go as well as the beautiful picnic benches at the canal end and Kerry County Council for bench installation and accessing the Healthy Ireland funding.

“All the information is available on the KRSP website, www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie. Such programmes are part of the ambition of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership in helping get the active more active, and the less active active, as well as promoting sport, recreation against the backdrop of our beautiful county,” said Córa.
