A NEW Consultant Cardiologist began working at University Hospital Kerry this week.

Dr Grace O’Carroll took up the position on Monday, October 7. Deputy John Brassil welcomed the news, saying he received an update from Ferghal Grimes, UHK General Manager as a reply to a parliamentary question submitted seeking clarification on when the post would be filled.

In June of 2018, the HSE told Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil that the recruitment process had commenced to replace the consultant, it has taken a further fifteen months to appoint someone to the job.

Deputy Brassil said “Whilst I welcome the appointment, the timeframe for the recruitment process is not acceptable, if UHK is to continue as a category-three 24/7 hospital, the appointment to vacant positions needs to be priority and the Department of Health and the HSE need to review the recruitment process to ensure that there is no delay in the filling of essential posts.”
