THE former Principal of Kerry College in Tralee has launched a new advice and support hub for guardians, students and graduates, ahead of the CAO offers this Friday.

Mary Lucey left her role as Principal of Kerry College, Clash and Denny Street Campuses earlier this year and is now focussed on her new service at www.careerahead.ie

Mary Lucey has been employed in education both at further education and third level education for most of her working life.  She has held a wide range of positions and taken on a variety of roles which has resulted in the accumulation of knowledge and insight. Her new service will offer support before, during and after college.

“This kind of support and advice hub is currently not available and Career Ahead will be accessible nationwide,” she said.

“There is already enormous interest being demonstrated in the hub by schools, colleges and businesses, in addition to career guidance services and other voluntary organisations. I founded this hub as there is huge dropout rates from third level colleges and I believe these figures could be reduced significantly.  Time and time again, I meet a student who has made an incorrect decision, based on lack of knowledge, and it can have major implications.

Mary says she meets graduates who cannot put a cv or letter of application together or do not know how to undertake an interview effectively to secure employment or further studies.

She meets employers from all industry sectors who are amazed at how ill-prepared new university graduates can be upon leaving college and entering the workforce.

“I am talking about providing information and advice to help a student survive from secondary school to selecting the most suitable college course; to progressing successfully through college to the next stage of entering the workforce.”
