TRALEE has a new Environment Task Force as part of the Tralee Chamber Alliance Town Team and its main short-term goal is to make Kerry’s capital the Greenest Town in Ireland.

‘GLAN Tralee’, the first project to be undertaken by the Environment Task Force, is a community movement supported by Tralee Chamber Alliance and An Taisce designed to foster a cleaner, greener and more environmentally sustainable town.

GLAN is the Irish word for Clean and GLAN also stands for: Green Local Area Network.

The Chairperson of Tralee Chamber Alliance’s Town Team, Brian Stephenson, said: “Tralee is the capital of Kerry – a county known worldwide as a place of immense beauty – and the capital town should lead the way. Organisations in Tralee including businesses, clubs, schools and public bodies will be asked to make ‘green and clean’ commitments. These will include participating in regular clean-ups, taking responsibility for the upkeep of an area in town, moving away from single use plastic, implementing waste reduction practices and considering more sustainable energy sources.”

Over the coming months, individuals will be encouraged to get involved by becoming GLAN Ambassadors, responsible for promoting good environmental practices in their own network.

Tralee has made great strides in a range of areas in recent years from winning the award for being Ireland’s Best Large Tourism in 2015 to the overall title as Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town in 2017.

The town has won six Tidy Towns Gold Medals in-a-row, the prestigious Entente Florale Gold Medal, the Purple Flag for having a safe, vibrant and well-managed Night Time Economy and three Blue Flag Beaches within a 15 minute drive.

“The global workforce is increasingly mobile which means people and companies can set-up and work almost anywhere in the world. Developing Tralee as a Green Town will generate jobs and inward investment and will be good for our environment, health and well-being, tourism and the local economy,” said Brian Stephenson

Tralee and Dingle are the first towns in Ireland to roll out GLAN. Organisations and individuals can get involved by going to www.tralee.ie/Glan.
