It aims to bring the stories the local area to life for visitors to Carrigafoyle Castle. With the support of the Irish Language Commissioner, an Irish placename plaque has also been installed at the Discovery Point.

Standing on the edge of the Shannon estuary on what was originally an island, Carrigafoyle Castle rises to five storeys with vaults over the second and fourth storeys.

Constructed in the 15th century, it was the main stronghold of the O Connor Kerry, the principal chieftain of this barony named after him. For 400 years they were an important part of the ever changing political and military jigsaw of those times.

Minister Griffin unveiled the discovery point with Cllr Michael Foley, Maire Healy, Fáilte Ireland, Helen Lane, Volunteer Ballylongford tourism, and Marian Leydon, Fáilte Ireland.
