A NEW walkway which aims to get people active and learn more about an historical part of Tralee, was officially opened by Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Norma Foley, on Wednesday across from Tralee Library.

The new Mitchels Boherbee Regeneration Walkway starts at Moyderwell and leads down Cloonbeg Terrace, left down Garryruth/Mitchels Road to the grotto and back up Boherbee, turning left at St Patrick’s Bungalows up to the outdoor gym at the convent garden in Moyderwell and back up to the library.

It has been developed by the Interagency Promoting Play Committee and provides people with the opportunity to reach the recommended 10,000 walking steps a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The walk itself is calculated at 1.7km and 2,240 steps.

The walkway uses local historical landmarks as counters/markers and encourages participants to increase their fitness and reacquaint themselves with the local historical highlights of the area.

Along the way it passes places of historical interest like the Fever Hospital (now the site of Tralee Library), the Carnegie Library (now Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí), the County Jail (near Kellihers Electrical) and the Militia Barracks (now St Patrick’s Bungalows).

The project is an excellent example of the cooperation of agencies working together. The committee acknowledged the support Tim Mc Swiney, former Council engineer and Joe Carey of Kerry County Council in supporting the initiative.
