TRALEE Garda Station is taking part in a pilot programme which will help members of the deaf community in the county.

From Friday, March 1, the station is one of two in the country to trial the system, where people from the deaf community can come in to the station to report a crime.

They will have an online service where they contact a member of an Garda Síochána who appears via video link and they can converse in sign language with the person who wants to report the crime.

This is the first time this system has been rolled out in the country. Sergeant Tim O’Keeffe said this follows on from the ‘See Something, Say Something’ texting campaign which has been a big success with members of the deaf community in Tralee.

Speaking to Radio Kerry, Sergeant O’Keeffe said the ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign continues to yield positive results and they have seen reduction in anti-social behaviour since it was introduced last year.
