The Square

YOU’VE got to hand it to the people in No.4 On The Square; they know their interiors.

There’s been a lot of work going on over the past couple of months at the former Nightjar/Ruairis/Jack’s (remember Jack’s!) and the results are very impressive.

Gone are the dark wood furnishings and minimalist decor and in come rustic pine tables, luxurious looking leather armchairs, numerous quirky light fittings and stylish,  brightly upholstered high stools…and that’s just the ground floor.

The first floor looks like a log cabin in Vermont decorated by a hipster from Brooklyn – it works brilliantly, helped in part by the cool jazz/soul/funk coming from the speakers.

A glance at the restaurant on the next floor up is in a similarly cool vein, while there’s even a couple of swings on the landing further up the stairs.

But enough about style, it was lunchtime and I was hungry.

The lunch menu certainly is imaginative with ‘crispy prawns in panko crumb dressed garden salad aioli’ (€11), ‘carne asada slow cooked beef brisket with tomato and coriander salsa and sour cream served in soft flour tortilla shells with a jalapeño dip (€8.50) and ‘tempura of hake with handout chips, tossed salad and homemade tartar sauce’ (€10.50) to name but three (see the full lunch menu here)

Being boring, I decided to go for the ‘sandwich of the day’ which was a chargrilled chicken sandwich with tomato, mozzarella and salad with handout chips.

I gave the order and took in the stylish surroundings, observing the clientele nearby which consisted of a couple of trendy 20-somethings, three ‘ladies-who-lunch’ enjoying  a glass of wine and small groups of office workers.

There was a marked absence of young families and – while I’m sure children are welcome – it appears No.4… is more amenable to an older clientele.

The sandwich arrived and it was good. The ciabatta-like bread was gorgeous and fresh, while the chicken/mozzarella/tomato worked great, but could have done with more dressing (which was solved by a little ramekin of mayo supplied). The chips were delicious and left me wanting more.

No.4… is a cool bar/bistro that wouldn’t be out of place on South William Street.

Another welcome addition to the Square.
