MERCY Mounthawk made a gallant attempt to win the U19A Subway Schools Cup Final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght this afternoon.

Despite massive support from 12 busloads of supporters, they couldn’t get the better of Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG from Cork who ran out 79 to 68 winners.

The Cork city side led from early on, heading the first quarter 22 to 14. While Mounthawk closed the gap midway through the second, the Cork side pulled away again and led 42 to 35 at half-time.

Try as they might through the second-half, they just couldn’t get within touching distance of a clinical North Mon side who won by 11 points and deserved their victory.

It’s been a memorable few weeks for Mounthawk after beating rivals CBS The Green in an epic semi-final. Great credit is due to them and their coaching staff.
