THE building of a new home for Tralee Boxing Club is at a standstill due to funding problems, councillors were told on Monday.

At Monday’s meeting of Tralee Municipal District — Fine Gael Cllr Jim Finucane and Sinn Féin Cllr Cathal Foley — asked for an update on the project and to ask the Council to progress the construction.

Kerry County Council approved plans to build a boxing club/community space at a site at Dean’s Lane in Boherbee, back in January of 2020.

In reply, Council management said acknowledged there is significant support at local level to develop the project.

The issue, they say, is to identify a funding source that can deliver the investment required for this facility.

The announcements under the Sports Capital Grants Schemes in recent years have not been at a scale to deliver on this project. The Council said they will continue to seek a source of funding to help realise this project.

Both councillors expressed their disappointment at the lack of progress acknowledging the great work Tralee Boxing Club does in the community. They hoped the project can be advanced as soon as possible.

Shocking waste of tax payers money.

Given it’s location will it will not be Tralee Boxing Club?

That club will serve one community only.
