GARDAI say there will be numerous checkpoints in the Killarney area over the weekend as thousands of motor enthusiasts will converge on the town for the International Rally of the Lakes.

Taking place from Friday to Sunday, this event is incorporated into the May Bank Holiday Weekend Festivities and has proved to be an exceptionally busy weekend for the town of Killarney and the surrounding area.

Speaking at Killarney Garda Station today, Sgt Dermot O Connell said; “This is the 40th year of the Rally of the Lakes, we wish the organisers well with their event and celebrations. For An Garda Síochána it is a significant policing operation. The massive influx of rally supporters, competitors and regular holiday weekenders to the Killarney area is estimated to be in the regions of 60,000 visitors.”

“This year’s Policing Operation has built on the success of recent years; it sets out the plan of action to deal effectively with all of the policing needs that have been identified following consultation with the many stakeholders. There will be numerous checkpoints set up over the weekend as well as increased high visibility patrols in the Killarney area. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. If you intend on having a drink, park up the car for the evening and remember that they may still be over the limit the morning after a night out.”
