Orlagh Winters ProfileRECENTLY there has been a bit of a change in the economy for the good and it is certainly welcomed by all.

The retailers in Tralee who have weathered the storm deserve to be supported now and in the future.

Independent retailers are the backbone of any town and they will only continue to survive if we continue to support them.

I completely understand the appeal of ordering online, but if we all made a conscious effort to stay away from the world wide web and made our purchases locally we would be investing in our town’s future.

Social media has become the biggest selling tool for small businesses and there are some fantastic locally made videos posted on Facebook to whet our appetites to buy local.

Check out Wadding Butchers and Oaklands Daybreak to see how they are using social media.

Tonight is the beginning of KFW2015 and I am very proud to be acting as MC for the opening show in The Pavilion at Ballygarry.

The show focuses on all things Kerry and will have collections from past winners of the KFW Designer of the Year. I am especially looking forward to seeing their new pieces and no doubt my credit card will start twitching.

Thankfully they all have very reasonably priced ranges so my bank manager will still smile at me.

Here in the Kingdom of Kerry we are exceptionally lucky to have such an abundance of fantastic retailers and they will be showing some up to the minute fashion tonight.

We all have an event, be it a wedding or a formal occasion that we will be splashing out this year so make sure when at all possible that you shop local.

My argument for shopping local is what the retailers give back to the town and county.

When the children of today want part time jobs to help alleviate the cost of college, they won’t get them on the internet, they will however get them from local retailers.

Every year there are hundreds of charity raffles and events that will be supported with huge generosity by local businesses and once again I need to stress that websites will never do this.

From collection boxes on counters to spot prizes, local businesses will always support local clubs, schools and charities and it is only fair that we in turn support them.

We can’t expect the businesses to keep digging deep if we don’t continue to buy from them.

So folks, this gal must go and get her glam pants on, it takes longer the older I get.

Until next week,

Stay stylish!

Orlagh xx
