Orlagh new profile 1OCTOBER as many of you will know is Breast Cancer Awareness month and for that reason I am giving you all a gentle reminder that if there is any lump, bump or pain that you are unsure about, please go and get it checked.

So many times we ignore our bodies and think that by doing so, the problem will disappear. This as we know in never going to happen, in fact it is the opposite. Early detection in key to receiving the appropriate treatment and thus full recovery in most cases.

I don’t know why we do it, but we do? We think that if we are going to the doctor to get something checked that we are wasting his/her valuable time. It is bizzare really when we have a bad cough or flu like symptons we go straight to our doctor for an antibiotic. Yet if we have a sinister ache or pain, lump or bump we are slower to make that visit. No one but yourself knows your own body so only you can tell if there is something amiss.

Over 2,000 women and 11 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year according to statistics. For those of you who come within the age bracket of a free breast check, don’t discard the pamphlet when it arrives. Go to the appointment, if nothing else it will set your mind at ease. Encourage your mother, aunt, sister or daughter to go.

Research has led to the development of many new trials and drugs, so if you have a few euros to spare then please donate. I only ever donate to research as I know that 100% of the funds raised goes to the crucial research that saves lives.

I am still on the Tailor X breast cancer trial and I like to think that maybe the research that was done on my tumour may have saved someone somewhere.

Throughout the month there are many fundraising events including right here in Tralee. Nathan and Bernie at Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre are hosting a coffee morning that starts at 11am and runs to 2pm on Friday, October 16.

Another date for your diary if you would like to feel good about yourself is Tuesday, October 13 in Sam McCauleys at 7.30pm. This event is entitled “Love yourself this winter with Lancôme”. Let’s face it now and again we all need a little lift.

Until next week,

Look after yourself and your body!

Orlagh xx
