Orlagh Winters: The Sooner We Leave Behind The Homophobic Ireland Of Old The Better

Orlagh Winters ProfileSO I made it home last night and without sounding like the typical homecoming holidaymaker, it sure is cold.

Brass monkey springs to mind. Abu Dhabi is an amazing place with lots to see and do and has changed its attitude towards women considerably since I first visited almost 20 years ago.

It’s funny when you are away that you always keep an eye on the weather at home.

While looking at twitter I was gob smacked at the attention that our health minister Leo Varadkar’s “coming out” caused. It is 2015 after all and surely the time has come to accept people whatever their sexual preference is.

Last August, when our very own Rose of Tralee, Maria Walsh, announced she was gay, the response was very positive and rightly so. She is an intelligent, beautiful well spoken lady who happens to be gay – no big deal right?

RTE had a great new programme on last night with Claire Byrne where she spoke with Hollywood actor Colin Farrell about same sex marriage.

It was a great interview and Colin recalled the bullying his brother Eamon experienced growing up as he was gay.

“I remember him coming home with blood on his shirt, and he got plenty of beatings,” he said.

This is disgusting and it makes me feel ashamed and embarrassed that it happened and continues to happen in our country. Where does this bigotry and homophobia stem from? Calling the child who prefers ballet over football a “faggot” or “queer” seems to be tolerated by some parents and until we educate our young that being gay is completely acceptable, our future will be bleak.

The same sex marriage referendum is coming shortly and I for one will be voting ‘Yes’. Who am I to decide that a loving relationship between two men or two women should not be afforded the same entitlement as my marriage does?

Thankfully I have many gay friends and many who are in long-term relationships or civil partnerships and they have also given children a beautiful, happy, safe home.

One of the anti-gay marriage topics is that the children the couple may or may not decide to have will be doomed without a mother or father figure.

What a load of rubbish.

If that was the case, the children of single mothers all over the country must at this stage be growing horns. Lots of girls raise children without any support or influence from the father and do a damn good job.

The argument that marriage will somewhat be diluted by same sex couples just doesn’t wash with me.

I do, however, respect that some people don’t agree with the union of gay men or women and that is fine, but I would hope that they would think of the future.

Who knows whose son, daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew will be gay and that your hope for them would be that they would have the same rights as their siblings, wouldn’t it? Queer bashing and gay-related suicides need to be eradicated.

The sooner that we leave behind the homophobic Ireland of old, the better. It is a trend I would love to see the back of. Live and let live is my motto.

Until next week,

Stay stylish!

Perfectly said Orlagh, very proud of all my gay, straight and crazy friends as long as they are keeping it real who is anyone to judge. People need to look inwards more before they find the need to judge others. Xx

  2. Very well said Orlagh. Love is love, and some people just happen to be gay, no big deal. Who are the rest of us to stand in the way of them being happy and fulfilled. By committing to each other, it doesn’t affect my marriage. We should all be equal citizens with the same rights and at the moment many are not – the wrong message to be giving kids growing up.
