Orlagh new profile 1WHY is it that we as a nation find it so difficult to take a compliment?

This is particularly true when it comes to us ladies. How often have you heard yourself or others say when they are told that they are looking well, the response is “God I don’t know about that” or “I feel like s*** but it’s the only thing that fits”.

I myself am as guilty as the next when someone admires something that I am wearing, I usually say; “This old thing (the dress not myself) I have it for ages”.

Now don’t get me wrong I love the fact that I have some items of clothing in my wardrobe that are so old that they are now coming back into fashion.

Where do our insecurities stem from? Is it because of the unreal images we see on glossy magazines and television that we feel that we have a certain body image to achieve?

I wish that for one day only, that every photo of celebrities and models was shown with the untouched version as well as the finished product. I think that this would help us to have a more realistic impression of what we perceive to be the perfect body or face.

I do hate intrusions by paparazzi on celebrities, especially when they are going about their day to day lives. These vermin love nothing more than to snap someone famous having an off day or what they consider the wonderful achievement of “catching them without full make up and ball gown”.

Thank God for small mercies because if I was ever “papped” in my everyday attire and without make-up, it would be safe to say that the headline would read ‘Paranoramal activity spotted in Tralee, Ghostbusters to investigate’.

There is nothing as nice as putting on the gladrags and getting dressed up for a special day or night and boosting the confidence.

Next time you receive a compliment and someone says something nice about your appearance, reply with a simple thank you.

On the flip side of that, if you see a friend or indeed a stranger who you thinks looks well, tell them. Without sounding like a complete freak or potential stalker just say that you like their coat, bag or dress or whatever the case may be. Sometimes a nice word from a stranger can really make your day.

So there you have it, be nice and the universe will reward you. Take your compliment but keep the good karma going. Try at all costs not to offend anyone and as my wise mother always told me that if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, say nothing.

As always, until next week,

Be kind to each other!

Orlagh xx
