Orlagh new profile 1OK, so I get that we don’t need to go around like some crazy happy lunatics, grinning like Cheshire cats, in order to show some positivity.

But this may be necessary in order to keep the Negative Nualas at bay.

What has happened to positivity?

I write with reference to the remarks made on Facebook when TraleeToday.ie posted a story yesterday that Tralee has become a  thriving boomtown.

Now let’s give TraleeToday.ie some credit. They did not pick this story out of the clouds.  They did not suddenly decide that it would be a good idea to write a fairytale.

The story referred to an article written by an Irish Independent journalist who received her information after research was conducted on Tralee and various other towns and cities on our green isle.

So what has me seeing red this week? Let me divulge all! Why can’t people show a little pride in their town?

I, as you may know, am a “blow-in” and I am delighted that there is such articles written about Tralee, as it is here that I live and it is here that I make my living.

So it only makes sense that it is good to hear that Tralee is on the up. Quit moaning about everything that Tralee has going against it and start looking at everything that Tralee has to offer to us.

On Sunday night in Siamsa, the curtain fell on a show that would not be out of place on Broadway.

‘Sister Act’ was one of the best productions that I have ever witnessed. The talent on the stage was in abundance and the cast deservedly got standing ovations every night.

Oliver Hurley, the award winning genius, once again directed the show and got the very best out of the Tralee Musical Society.

Last night I visited the Ashe Hotel and it was a really pleasant experience. The décor is wonderful and the staff really are welcoming and friendly.

Next month we will see another hotel, Benners, open in the centre of town which is fantastic to see. We will also see the opening of a new nightclub, Quarters, that will hopefully put an end to the droves of young people leaving town by the busload on Saturday nights.

Banna Beach, Blennerville Windmill, the Aquadome, Wetlands, Tralee Golf Club and Kerry County Museum are all beautiful attractions on our doorstep so let’s embrace what we have and start talking good about our town.

Stop the bitching and moaning and see the glass half full for a change. We need to sell our town to visitors not criticise it at every opportunity.

Tralee Chamber Alliance do brilliant work in ensuring that we have lots to offer tourists and indeed locals, so let’s get behind them in showing a little pride in this tremendous town.

Quit the negative comments and let’s prove that yes we have survived a horrible recession but we are back on our feet and we are ready for business.

As always, I implore you to support local. Tralee has become a great shopping town so stay away from buying on the internet and put the money back into our local economy. (continued below)

Tralee is bloody brilliant now let’s tell everyone!

Until next week,

Positive thoughts only!

Orlagh xx

  1. Hi Orlagh,
Great to read your article about the dimise of the negative nualas in Tralee.
I visited Tralee for the first time in 10 ( yes 10) years of late, after having lived there
1992-1995. Having keep in contact with all my old work/collage buddies over the years. I do recognise the socio – economic effect of a recession on my beloved second home.
However the winds of change have arrived, a new dawn has came for Tralee. All my friends old and new in your town are very positive about the future for families. A town is all about atitude , saying yes once to many doors opened down the line. Business is all about saying yes too. Who said the first yes to the Rose of Tralee?
As a fellow outsider who regards Tralee as my second home, i applaud you for this article.
    Mise le Meas Tom Harte

  2. Delighted about the economic good news.

    Best wishes!

    I love Tralee.

Have you been to Tralee town along the Kerry shore,
Have you been there when the team arrive and hear the crowd roar.
Have you ever seen our fields of hay along Listellick hill,
Or been asked to dance in Tralee town and reply “I will”.

Have you been down in Denny street to see who won the Rose,
Or placed a bet in Ballybeggan, your horse beaten by a nose.
Have you seen our coloured hills when you fly in to Farranfore,
Or have lobster in our restaurants, lick your plate, then ask for more.

Have you ever seen the chimney tops when you ramble down Day Place,
Have you ever shopped in Tralee town to buy the finest lace.
Have you been to Siamsa Tíre to study art or enjoy a play,
Or have you ever sailed from foreign shores to land in Tralee Bay.

Did you have a walk in our town park, take a breath & feel the air,
Enjoy the music, the coffee and the people in the square.
Have you ever see our trawlers land their catch on Fenit pier,
Have you ever stood in The Mall and say, I’m finally here.

Have you seen the Slieve Mish Mountains watching over Tralee Town,
Snowcapped in winter and in Springtime golden brown.
Have you walked in Ballyseedy Woods, watch the leaves turning hue,
Of the Oak, the Ash, the branches clash and the bells of blue.

Did you ever swim from Locke’s Strand out to Samphire Rock
Or take a walk by the Canal as far as the Lock.
Have you ever seen our Christmas lights down the length of Castle Street,
Or watch the windmill in Blennerville turn it’s wheels and crush the wheat.

Oh I’ve seen and been many places, most of high renown,
From the gondolas of Venice to New York & China Town.
So if you’re looking for good humour and good friends all around,
Just pack your bags with silk or rags and visit Tralee Town.

It is a bit insulting to say people who disagree with an article have no pride in their town as you stated you are a blow in and some of the people commenting are born and bred here and are sick of the fact that the Ida and Shannon development are ignoring tralee completely. Job in the hotel industry are low paid and anti social I work in it myself I hate seeing our graduates leave cos nothing here for them. We love this town but have every right to ask for better and not have smoke blown up our arsed

  5. Well done Orlagh
I agree 100per cent with you
Tralee is a great town and we should be proud of it
As jfk said many years ago ask not what your country can do for you But what you can do for your country
Go up and down the country and see what a great town we have
As a trader I have to be positive nobody else is going to give it to me
