The Roast House

Denny Street

Tidy Roast 1IT’S been a while.

We ran an ‘Out To Lunch’ review for over a year on the website but, of course, eventually we ran out of places to write about.

Well since starting the column almost two years ago, we decided it was time to resurrect it, as things can change a lot in the town’s eateries over two years.

Where better place to start then than The Roast House, which wowed us in May 2014 with it’s cool surroundings, background music and top quality dishes. Back then I wrote that it had both style and substance unlike some restaurants during the Celtic Tiger years.

When I called into the Denny Street business on Wednesday for a bite to eat, I discovered not much has changed…which is a good thing!

First of all, it was 1.30pm and there wasn’t a table to be found. I was asked if I minded sitting at the counter (which I didn’t as I was alone) and planted myself to peruse the menu and listen to the jazz-funk tunes soundtracking people’s lunches.

Being Ash Wednesday, there were fish dishes on the specials and one of which looked particularly great; poached prawns in a lemon dill and spring onion marie rose on homemade brown bread.

Being Ash Wednesday, it was gone by the time I could order it! Dammit!

From the mouthwatering sandwich menu (there were some great mains also to choose from), I ordered the ‘sliced free range chicken breast with Toonsbridge buffalo mozzarella, sun ripened tomatoes, homemade basil pesto and rocket leaves on toasted sourdough bread served with side salad (€8.50)’.

By the time it was ready, I was told a table had come available and was showed to the bustling back of the restaurant where I was surrounded by couples of all ages.

The food was as sublime as it always is. The pesto and mozzarella especially was delicious and a nice relish with the side salad  complemented the plentiful sandwich.

I followed it up with an Americano and happily paid the €11 and went on my way.

The popularity of The Roast House shows no sign of waning and rightly so because they’re  very good at what they do – great food, service and ambience.
