THERE was a phenomenal reaction to an appeal for unwanted bicycles at the weekend.

Tralee Rotary Club organised a drop-off point for the bicycles which will be done up and sent to Africa where children will use them to get to school.

There were more than 400 bikes dropped off at Tralee Rugby Club, far more than anticipated and now they will be transported to Cavan where they will be worked on and sent to Africa.

Grace O’Donnell of Tralee Rotary Club was overwhelmed with the response and said people were dropping off bikes non-stop from 11am to 6pm.

She also said there were some happy, sad and fascinating stories behind the reasons for donating the bikes.

With so many collected, Grace was left with a logistical problem in transporting the bicycles, but a few local businesses have come on board and they are close to finalising arrangements to get them up to Cavan.

John Ryle made a short film about the event which can be viewed below…
