Speaking to Pa Laide , CEO Cara Credit Union “ we understand the college years are a very expensive time and often place a huge financial burden on students and their families. While our education awards don’t solve the problem, they do go some way towards easing the financial pressure. Cara Credit Union has never been more relevant for students, with our new Current Account and globally accepted Mastercard Debit Card we can now serve our students when they move onto college. Students up to the age of 25 and in a full-time course of studies are eligible for fee concessions. We also offer a low interest rate loan for students who need a loan. For parent who have saved up for college we have a low rate Saver’s Loan, which gives parents the option to “spend it or save it” on loans of €5,000 or more. Most people find it easier to repay a loan than it is to save so they borrow on the strength of their savings. With our saver’s loan they still have their savings at the end of the loan plus they have the flexibility of knowing that they can repay their loan anytime without penalty and they have peace of mind of free life cover on both their loans and their savings with our Loan Protection and Life Savings Insurance. ”

Kerry Airport Unveiled As Lead Sponsor of Basketball In The Kingdom For 2020

BASKETBALL at juvenile and senior level in Kerry has been given a major boost at the start of the new season with the announcement that Kerry Airport has become the lead sponsor of the sport in the county.

The Kerry Area Basketball Board (KABB) season has just commenced with over 300 teams competing in over 50 League, Cup and Plate competitions. These competitions will now be known as the Kerry Airport League, Kerry Airport Cup and Kerry Airport Plate Competitions at all levels from Juvenile up to Senior in both Girls / Women and Boys / Men.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “We are celebrating our 50th anniversary at Kerry Airport and over the coming year, we are reaching out to communities throughout the county to show our appreciation of what they do for others. Basketball – in clubs and schools – is at the heart of so many towns and villages in Kerry. Hundreds of people play, coach and coordinate games, camps and activities from Ballybunion to Caherciveen, from Kenmare to Dingle, from Farranfore to Glenbeigh. Most of these wonderful people are volunteers who invest so much time and energy year after year for the love of the sport and to ensure that youngsters have a healthy social outlet. We are proud to play our part and we are looking forward to working closely with KABB in promoting and developing the sport at club level into the future.”

The partnership between Kerry Airport and KABB will also embrace the representative Kerry Juvenile Girls and Boys Teams from Under 14 to Under 17 as well as the Juvenile Academy Under 12 and Under 13 Teams. The new-look Kerry Airport logo will be featured on the team jerseys.

Kerry Airport, which serves two German destinations with Ryanair, is planning to send one of the underage teams to compete against a German team in Berlin in the new year.

The Executive Secretary of Kerry Area Basketball Board, David Ahern, said: “The Kerry Area Basketball Board is delighted to announce a new partnership with Kerry Airport for 2020. It's an exciting time in Kerry Basketball as the game is enjoying continued growth throughout the county. Kerry basketball is involved in many communities in all parts of the Kingdom and everyone involved in Kerry Basketball is excited to be part of Kerry Airport’s plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a gateway to Ireland and the rest of the world.”

Kerry Airport recently announced Pieta House as its charity partner for 2020 and KABB will also work closely with Kerry Airport to stage a fundraising event in support of Pieta House next year.

Kerry Airport is ideally located for anyone wishing to travel on business or pleasure with direct flights to seven destinations including: London-Stansted, London-Luton, Frankfurt-Hahn, Berlin, Alicante & Faro with Ryanair and to Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional. A LINE OF CONES WON’T STOP A SPEEDING CAR, BUT YOU CAN’
Council launches campaign to improve safety at roadworks sites

Kerry County Council has launched a new campaign to promote awareness of the responsibilities of motorists approaching or driving past roadworks which are underway on the county’s roads.

Dangerous driving at roadworks where a one-lane system or diversions are in place can endanger the safety and lives of council staff or those contracted to carry out works on behalf of Kerry County Council.

The awareness campaign is aimed at reminding motorists of the need to approach roadworks with care, to drive past roadworks slowly and carefully and to heed advisory signage and the presence of traffic cones at roadworks locations.

Safety Officer with Kerry County Council, Tim O’Sullivan said motorists should observe four simple principles when approaching roadworks: Adhere to the speed limit on display; follow the temporary road signage in place; stay alert for roadworkers and machinery; and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

“At any given time, there are multiple road repair and maintenance works taking place around the county with varying numbers of workers at different locations. To all intents and purposes, these working location constitute the workplace of those individuals and they are entitled to carry out their work in a safe environment.

“Part of ensuring that these workplaces are safe involves the cooperation of motorists. It is understandable that delays caused by roadworks can lead to frustration, but we are asking drivers to drive past roads workers as if they were family members. They might not be the driver’s family, but they are someone’s.

“A significant problem can be motorists breaking red lights at roadworks where temporary traffic lights are in place. This endangers the safety of the motorist themselves, other road-users and those working on the site and should never be done.

“With the patience and cooperation of all road-users, we can ensure that motorists and workers alike avoid accidents, injury or worse. So, our main message is: A line of cones won’t stop a speeding car, but you can,” he added.

The publicity campaign will take place on Kerry County Council’s social media accounts over the coming weeks.
