THE importance of healthy lifestyle choices was the main lesson at Spa NS last Friday as the school hosted their annual ‘Health and Fitness’ day.
As part of the school’s participation in the European Week of Sport and in association with National Fitness Day, a wide variety of activities were organised for everyone to enjoy.
The students took part in a lively aerobic and dance session in the morning and each class tried their hand at the ‘Climb a mountain’ skipping challenge.
Niamh Murphy from Tralee Triathlon Club put everyone through their paces in a workshop explaining the disciplines involved in a triathlon.

However, the students got some chill out time during their mindfulness classes. Each class also visited the school garden making final preparations for the school’s ‘Harvest Day’ next Tuesday when the classes will harvest and cook the vegetables grown in the garden during the year.
A number of health professionals visited the school and gave presentations to the classes. Dr. John Chute spoke to the students about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, dentist Colette O’Connor reminded them of the importance of good dental hygiene.
Dietician, Deirdre Kelly gave a wonderful presentation about good nutrition and local gardaí Seamus Moriarty and Kerry star Aidan O’Mahony gave the students some safety tips when exercising outside.
However, the highlight of the day was the ‘Teachers v Students’ contest in the afternoon when the staff took on the 6th class students in a number of different challenges like 5 a side soccer, basketball shoot out, spikeball and boccia.
This was a hectic contest with both teams giving their all. However, everyone seemed happy when former principal and official referee Tom Crowley blew the final whistle and declared it a draw.
Health co-ordinator, Mrs. Griffin Crowe was delighted with the day. “It was a great success! The students really seemed to enjoy the different activities and presentations. They are very knowledgeable and are leading the way.”
School Principal Peter Linehan agreed; “Everyone in Spa NS is very committed to the important message of health promotion. We all had a really fun day and are now looking forward to having a happy, healthy and safe year ahead!” Scroll down for photos…
