Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley did the honours while local photographer Domnick Walsh spoke about the importance of press photography and how the still image can convey a message or an emotion better than TV cameras ever could.

A selection of Ireland’s best examples of press photography from Ireland and overseas are on show and Kerry photographers are well represented among the images.

‘Multimedia’, for best use of video, was awarded to Killarney native Bryan O’Brien. A quirky observation of the election count won Domnick Walsh second prize in the politics category for his photograph entitled ‘Vote Healy-Rae’, which shows a voting badge stuck to the heel of a man as Danny Healy-Rae wins a seat in the 2016 general election.

Fellow Tralee native, Brendan Moran, Sportsfile, won prizes in three categories – news, sports feature and portrait. Caherciveen photographer Stephen McCarthy, also of Sportsfile, won first and second prize in the sports feature category.

The PPAI is a not-for-profit, volunteer led organisation comprising of the best photographers in Ireland, both established as well as up-and-coming talent. Scroll down for photos…
