IT was an exciting time last week for pupils of Moyderwell Mercy Primary School, when their new playground was ready for use and Mercy Day was held at the school.
We called up on Friday morning to see the senior infants get their first turn on the €30,000 playground which features climbing frames, slides and grid walks.
“We have been planning this for the last few years,” said School Principal Moira Quinlan. “We thought it would be wonderful to have some kind of playground equipment that would enhance the facilities here and add to our indoor facilities in the gym. Thankfully, this year it came to fruition. The children are really excited about it and hopefully, going forward, they will get immense value from it.”

“Obviously a playground spells fun, but there are huge physical and emotional benefits to it as well so it’s good for their overall development and will be an enjoyable feature in the school,” said the Principal.
Ms Quinlan also said it was nice that the children got to see it being constructed and the anticipation had been building for weeks since they returned to school.
Also, despite last Sunday being Mercy Day, it was celebrated in the school on Friday keeping up a tradition which has lasted decades.
“September 24 is the Feast of Our Lady Of Mercy and since we’re a Mercy school we celebrate that day and remember the contribution the sisters have made to education,” said Principal Quinlan.

“To mark the day we take the children to Mass in St John’s and afterwards they all get ice-cream so it’s a very special day. It’s also the beginning of the school year, so at the Mass we ask for blessings for the pupils, parents and staff and their families,” she added.
The children certainly seemed to enjoy the treats in teacher Eoin Sayers’ sixth class where they were tucking into ice-cream wafers. Scroll down for photos…
