IT was a morning full of excitement on Thursday morning at CBS Primary school as they held their first CBS Cycle Against Suicide event.

The cycle was the brainchild of Ciarán Commane, a sixth class pupil in the school, who took it upon himself to organise the cycle for all the sixth class pupils in the school and it proved to be a massive success.

Ciarán has written about how he decided to set up the cycle, and it’s inspirational stuff…

“I first met Jim Breen by accident in Listowel when he was completing a run from Dublin to Belfast. I was running with my dad when we met him. He had fractured his shin and was really struggling to finish the route. I ran beside him for a while and got chatting to him. He spoke about Cycle Against Suicide and why he set it up.

I was thinking afterwards how I would love to do something like that in my own school, CBS Primary. I spoke to some of our teachers about the idea and they gave me brilliant support. I wanted to organise something that would bring us all together as a group, and that we would always remember.

The transition from Primary to Secondary school can be very difficult and I wanted my class to know that we could support each other. Jim’s message is that “Its ok not to feel ok”.

We are all different, and that’s ok too! I got great support from my school, my dad, An Garda Síochana, Kingdom Cycling Club and Kevin Finn.

Jim Breen came to our school this morning [Thursday] at 10.00am and gave us an inspirational talk about mental health. We then took off on a 6km route which I had planned out, with help from my dad. We had a brilliant morning, and the best part was definitely the welcome back to school. I hope that this might become an annual event at CBS, and I know it is something me and my classmates will remember forever.”

Well done to Ciarán on all the hard work he’s put into organising this fantastic event.
