PHOTOS: Competition Proves ‘Pres Girls Got Talent’

The “Soul Sistas” who  also won the overall 1st prize in ‘Pres Got Talent’.

THERE was huge excitement at Presentation Secondary School, Tralee on Monday as the first ever “Pres Got Talent” competition celebrated the huge range of musical talents from all years in the school.

Two shows were held for the school in the Pres Primary Hall – Junior cycle students between 10 and 12 noon  and Senior students between 1 & 3p.m.

Students bought tickets for €3 which covered entry but also one vote in the “People’s Choice award”.

Head girls Aoife Dillane and Áine O’Sullivan compered the event – introducing the judges Mrs. Kirby, staff representative, Mr. David Rath, music teacher and Ms. Fiona O’Neill of the O’Neill sisters from Causeway.

Twenty-four acts took part in total representing many different talents. A wide variety of musical genres were featured on the day.

Sisters, Michaela and Tara Murphy, 6th year, performed “The Prayer” by Andrea Bocelli and Grace McLoughlin, 1st year, the seasonal “O Holy Night”.

Eimear O’Sullivan of 3rd year  treated the audience to poll-topping tune “Fairy tale of New York” on her fiddle with Caroline Hurley also 3rd year playing a foot-tapping selection of jigs on her mandolin.

Nia Raduconce amazed with her Beatboxing and Feyi Odugbesan with the classic Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Another pair of sisters – Andreea & Antonia Gergely performed with accompaniment of guitar and bodhrán.

Kornelia Lemanske danced to piano accompaniment by Yvonne Hurley. All the performers went on stage at the end to present a medley of Christmas classics led by Feyi Odugbesan, Nia Raduconce and Precious Benjamin – a great finale enjoyed with great audience participation.

Events moved to main school PE hall for the presentation of prizes and thank yous but only after a surprising “Wild Card Act” with a number of staff members of Pres Tralee performing a dance routine to “Jingle Bell Rock” – well done to Ms. Cronin, Ms. C O’Mahony, Ms. Flynn, Ms. Jaeger, Ms. Boyle, Ms. O’Neill and Ms. O’Sullivan for adding to the seasonal cheer.

The Head girls thanked Presentation Primary for the use of their hall for the event, Billy and Pat Donegan for the sound and video production and the Parents Council of Presentation Secondary School, Tralee for kindly sponsoring the 1stprize of €250 for the event.

The girls thanked Ms. O’Neill and Ms. Lynch for all their help at rehearsals. Flowers were also presented to Ms. Prendeville on behalf of the SRC and also the performers in appreciation of her overall coordination of the event.

Judge Mrs. Kirby addressed all the students in the school and encouraged a round of applause to acknowledge the wonderful professional performances by all the acts before going on to announce the winners:

3rd place: Anna Sheehy, 6th year,

2nd place sisters Andreea (6th year) and Antonia Gergely ( 2nd year),

There was great delight when the People’s choice prize was won by “Soul Sistas” who  also won the overall 1st prize!

Sixth year students Maedhbh Dowling, Sarah Fitzgerald, Caoimhe Hanafin, Isobel Horgan, Nora O’Connell and Sharon O’Connor were clear favourites with their amazing performance of the Sister Act classic “I Will Follow Him”, excellent nuns’ habits with twinkling lights and clever choreography.

The event was coordinated by the SRC who sold the tickets at break times, attended the rehearsals and acted as valuable stage crew members! Ms. Prendeville acknowledged the huge commitment by the SRC members and staff members leading up to the event. Everyone at Pres Tralee is looking forward to next year’s event already!
