FRIENDS of a Tralee actress/director gathered in Siamsa Tire last night for a concert to help her efforts in gaining entry to one of the world’s top film schools.

‘Tralee to Hollywood: A Theatrical Journey’ attracted a big crowd to the event which will help Sarah-Jane Drummey’s bid to join the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women in Hollywood, California.

Directed by Oliver Hurley, it featured performances from the casts of Siamsa Tíre and Tralee Musical Society, John Drummey, Aidan O’Carroll, Lauralee Murphy, Alan Teahan, Bryan Carr, Olive Donegan and many more.

Speaking to Sarah Jane before the concert, she was delighted that Tralee people were supporting her efforts.

“I’m blown away, I can’t believe. To see it [the concert] go from a thought a month ago, to what it is tonight is just incredible. I feel humbled and privileged to be on stage with all the people who showed up here,” said Sarah Jane.

Of course Sarah – who was performing despite a touch of laryngitis – is no stranger to Siamsa.

“I started my career on this stage with many of the Siamsa people here tonight – Oliver Hurley, Jonathan Kelliher, Anne O’Donnell. To be back on stage with them is a real treat.”

And what of the future and her hopes of being successful in her bid to enter the course?

“The present is pretty brilliant, I just have to enjoy this minute and know that the future will take care of itself. If this is what tonight can bring, I’ve no doubt that things will go our way,” she said.

Sarah-Jane is among 40 women – selected from 400 candidates – in contention to be one of the eight people to be accepted into the programme.

The proceeds from the night will help cover the production budget for her next film Roisin Dubh, a post apocolyptic tale about three Kerry natives fighting for survival in 2085, which will begin shooting in July.

Her brother John Drummey, who was the driving force behind the event was delighted with how the concert went.

“We’d a great night! Thanks to Oliver Hurley who put it all together, the performers and tech team who made the show possible and the audience and those who supported the event in any way. A memorable event, thanks everyone.”

A memorable event indeed and thoroughly enjoyed by the many people who showed up. Scroll down for photos…
