FRIENDS and family of Darren Mullery came together Sunday night in the Fels Point Hotel to raise funds for a car for him and his family.
It was also the occasion of his 40th birthday celebrations.
“They said there was going to be a party for me and it came as a bit of a shock, it was a nice surprise for me,” said Darren.
Darren has been battling pancreatic cancer for the past number of months and made an inspirational video with Tralee Musical Society about his battle which has received just under 110,000 hits on Youtube (see story here).

“I just want to say a big thank you to Anne Flood and Rebecca Roche for arranging everything, none of this would have been possible without them I wouldn’t be having this fantastic night tonight,” said Darren.
“Darren had a smile on his face all night, it was great to bring everyone together for a good reason,” said one of the organisers Rebecca Roche on Monday morning.
“A lot of people just came and paid the €10 entrance fee, bought a few raffle tickets and left, so we want to say thanks to them for showing their support,” said Rebecca.
At the moment, Darren is reliant on friends to give him a lift to hospital if he falls seriously ill so they are trying to get the family their own car.
“At the moment we’re about €500 off our target, because we’re looking to get something reliable for Darren, something we’re sure won’t break down!” said Rebecca.
