THE sun shone on St Stephen’s Day for the annual Bill Kirby Memorial Walk in aid of the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry.

After dreadful weather last year put off the crowds, there was a much better turnout on Monday morning as people gathered outside Kirby’s Brogue Inn.

Organised as ever by Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor, it was a sad day for him, as his brother Martin died a few days before and his removal was held later that afternoon before burial on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, Fox was there to help collect funds for the worthy cause and a minute’s silence was held for Martin, before he sent the walkers off while singing his brother’s favourite song, ‘Michael Row The Boat Ashore’.

Kirby’s Brogue Inn supplied the refreshments for the walkers as always, at a lovely event which is a real St Stephen’s Day tradition.

Ted Moynihan of Kerry Hospice expressed his thanks to all those who attended and said the new Palliative Care Unit was scheduled to be ready for April. Scroll down for photos…
