PHOTOS: Hundreds Make It Another Successful CBS The Green Fun Run

CLOSE to 400 people took to CBS, The Green Secondary School on Sunday last to take part in their third annual 5K and 3K fun run.

Kerry footballer Barry John Keane shot the starting gun for the 5K run and rising Kerry senior star Jack Barry of Na Gaeil sent the 3K runners on their way sometime after 1pm.

“We were delighted with the event overall,” said teacher Helen Kelliher. “The atmosphere was electric and to see so many young kids and their families taking part made the event very special. Offering the two distances makes the event very accessible to both young and old and it was lovely to hear the kids asking each other the million dollar question regarding what distance they would go for.”

The Tommy Markham cup was also present carefully guarded by Dylan Casey and Ciaran O’Reilly both of whom were on the winning Kerry minor panel this year.

Former CBS student and All-Ireland winning under 21 hurling star Tomas O’Connor also made an appearance with the Richie McElligott cup.

The winner of the 5K was Derek Griffin of Tralee Harriers (16.55) followed by Arthur Fitzgerald in 2nd place (17.25.) In 3rd place was former past pupil of CBS, The Green George Bastille (17.40).

The first female home in the 5K was Tralee International Marathon winner Rachel Stokes of Kerry Crusaders (19.21), followed by Marie McKenna of Farranfore Maine Valley (20.52) and 3rd lady home was Ciara Tierney of Tralee Triathlon Club (21.03).

In the 3K, the first boy home was Conor McGinley followed closely by his brother Oisin McGinley in 2nd place, both representing Spa National School.

Cormac Clifford of CBS, The Green flew home in 3rd position. The first 3K lady home was Lilly Clifford of Fahy National School, second was Muire Kingston flying the Na Gaeil colours and third place went to Meah Carmody of Spa National School.

“A huge thank you to Lee Strand and Foley’s Spar, Castlemaine Rd for sponsoring our event for the 3rd successive year, to Declan Costello for supplying us with our finishing arch and to all other local businesses who offered us post race treats for our big day,” said Ms Kelliher.
