TEAMS of students and staff from IT Tralee participated in the SipITT fun triathlon on Wednesday evening.
The event consisted of a 5km run, a 10km cycle and a 500m swim.
Over a hundred students and staff participated or volunteered as marshals on the night. The winning team consisted of Trevor Dunne (lecturer), Catriona O’Dwyer (lecturer) and Kieran Dowling (student).
The triathlon was part of the SipITT project which aims to reduce levels of dangerous drinking and the associated harms as well as improving the students general health and well being.
The project is in its second year and the college has seen an improvement in student retention, performance, engagement and attendance as a result.
This is the second year the event has taken place, in total 18 teams of all abilities took part.
“We’re trying to put on activities to keep students out of the pub and improve their health overall,” said Jackie Ruttledge, lecturer and event organiser of the SipITT fun triathlon.
“Dangerous drinking is a societal problem. It’s not a problem that is unique to IT Tralee, but we are trying to respond to some of the large volumes of alcohol that are being consumed,” said Ms Ruttledge.
