SIXTY-FIVE businesses  availed of the opportunity to attend a Kerry Local Enterprise Office free seminar on Thursday entitled, ‘Building a Business on Your Ideas’ at the Sólás Building at the ITT.

The seminar, which was delivered in conjunction with the Irish Patents office, provided an insight into intellectual property rights (patents, trade marks, designs and copyright) and how they should be managed; how awareness of intellectual property rights can assist in converting an idea into a business opportunity as well as due diligence considerations in setting up a business.

The seminar, jointly organised by the Patents Office and the Kerry Local Enterprise Office in co-operation with Enterprise Irelandand Enterprise Europe Network, was aimed at small business-owners, entrepreneurs, inventors and start-up companies in Kerry and surrounding counties.

Speakers included experts from both the public and private sectors and there was also an opportunity to hear about various Government supports available from incubation to commercialisation.

It is not generally known that over 80% of new inventions are derived from, or inspired by, previous inventions, so following the seminar there was a workshop which offered guidance on where to source information on patented technologies and where details of previous inventions can be sourced.

Fiona Leahy of the Kerry Local Enterprise Office said: “This seminar presented a great learning opportunity for small business-owners, entrepreneurs, inventors and start-up companies who want to turn their ideas into viable enterprises and who want to ensure that intellectual property rights are not overlooked when developing a business strategy.”
