PHOTOS: Kerry Students Look Forward To BT Young Scientist Exhibition

TRALEE and Kerry schools will be well represented at the 58th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition which takes place virtually next week.

The Exhibition takes place from January 12th to 14th and has a spectacular line-up of performers and events which the public can enjoy, free of charge, by registering through the BTYSTE website www.btyoungscientist.com

Kerry has 27 projects entered in the competition including eight from Mercy Mounthawk, two from Presentation Secondary and one from Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí.

The Mounthawk projects are ‘Has online schooling stunted students’ ability to learn?’; ‘An investigation into suicide rates in EU countries and the factors that affect them’; ‘A study into motivational quotes and their effects on the mental health of teenagers’; ‘Stability of 3d Objects Using Convex Hull and Center of Mass Investigating the stability of 3d objects using Convex Hull and the centre of mass’; Distinguishing between pond Algae and Seaweed as a substitute for non biodegradable materials’; ‘Minimising Packaging Waste Using Convex Hulls’; ‘Designing A Surgical Forceps Incorporating Frustrated Total Internal Reflection For Energy Efficient Sealing and Cutting of Tissue Using Light Energy’; and ‘Specs – A Wearable Smart Device for Dementia Patients’.

The Presentation Tralee projects are ‘Calculators x (Over Reliance + Over Usage =Utilisation at an Early Age) – Practicing of Mental Maths= Reduced Mental Arithmetic Skills = National Underperformance’ and ‘Any News?’.

The Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí project is ‘Nature takes on nature: investigating the effect of Juglone on Japanese Knotweed’.

Other schools represented are Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland, Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, St. Brigid’s Secondary School, Tarbert Comprehensive School, Coláiste na Sceilge and Killarney Community College.
