THIS week Age & Opportunity’s Go for Life Programme teamed up with Sport Ireland and groups across the country to celebrate the 2018 European Week of Sport and Physical Activity,  which takes place across the country from September 22-30.

The aim of EWOS is to promote sport and physical activity across Europe. The week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level.

During the week the Go for Life Programme organises a number of “I’ve always wanted to try …..” events across the country, where individuals and groups of older people are invited to take part in a range of sports for the first time.

As part of EWOS in Kerry Age & Opportunity joined forces with Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership to organise a Go for Life Games Fest in John Mitchel’s GAA Club Tralee, to give older people in the region that chance to join in and #BEACTIVE.

The Go for Life Games themselves are devised specifically for older people. Games played on the day included ‘Scidils’ is a two-sided adaptation of ten pin bowling but using two skittles and ‘Flisk’, adapted from boccia and horseshoe pitching, and a new game ‘Málaí’ – an adaptation of the popular cornhole game using beanbags and a wooden box which is now being made for groups all over the country by Men’s Sheds.

These games, with clear rules and scoring systems, can be played and practiced by everyone, no matter what level of sporting ability.

They are great for developing balance, flexibility and concentration. The social aspect of the Games also brings people together with a healthy amount of competition to keep things interesting.

As an annual event, the European Week of Sport will inspire all kinds of creative and exciting events and activities in different countries. Scroll down for photos…
