A MAJOR Education Conference was held on Friday in the Institute Technology Tralee (Dromtacker) aimed at supporting the critical role of education in achieving social justice.
The event was organised by The Kerry Interagency Committee on Education Inclusion and sponsored by Kerry Education and Training Board and South Kerry Development Partnership through the SICAP programme.
The event was aimed at school staff including principals and deputy principals, teachers as well as other organisations supporting education.

The conference was opened by Mayor of Tralee Councillor Terry O’Brien. Among the keynote speakers at the event were Professor Kathleen Lynch of UCD and Dr. Marie Griffin, CEO of Ceist.

SKDP’s Education Officer Mairead O’Sullivan said that the event was about clearly recognising the importance of education in the area of social justice and in identifying ways that this role can be supported and strengthened.
Workshops on offer on the day included Special Education Needs, The New Junior Cycle and its contribution to Social Justice, The Role of Youth Work in supporting Formal and Non-Formal Education and also examining a Framework for Student Support.
There was also a workshop on the Star Pupil Programme and other such initiatives focused on encouraging members of the Travelling Community to engage fully with the education system.
