MAYOR of Tralee, Cllr Graham Spring, was delighted to open a new project at a Mitchels estate on Wednesday night.

Young people who were part of the Community Regeneration Street Art project were present to receive certificates from the Mayor for their work on a fantastic initiative which began in November 2017.

The theme and the intention was to play with paint to create an exuberant, colourful area behind the Aras an Phobail building near Croilar Na Mistealach.

The 20 plus fabulous murals which are now mounted on the walls were created by the young people who live on Croilar Na Mistealach and the young people from St. Brigid’s Community Centre, supported by KDYS Youth Workers and artist Muiriosa Murphy.

Tremendous fun was had by all, a lot was learned and a good deal of paint was scrubbed off of floor and walls in the process.

The benches and bins outside were also decorated in fun colours. Advantage was taken of the beautiful weather in the month of May to stencil lots of children’s games, including a Maize and Hopscotch, on the ground.

The intention was to create a fun outdoor space for the community to use, and as the project progressed and colour and life started to enter the area, how people used the space changed.

Office workers came out for their breaks and strolled about looking at the art and sitting and talking with their colleagues in the sunshine.

The project was completed to such a high standard with the help of the residents of Croilar Na Mistealach, the Tús Workers in the Community Gardens, residents of Johnson Marina and the users of the TIRC centre.  The project was  funded by Kerry County Council as part of regeneration initiative.
