IT was a manic Monday at Listellick NS as staff and pupils finally made the big move to their amazing, brand new school.

Construction began back in the summer of 2021 and the finished product is certainly worth the wait. The school body all made the walk together from the old school just 50 yards down the hill, to the big, bright, impressive new building at 9am.

In fact, they were continuing a walk up the hill which the pupils of 1969 started when they strolled from their old school even further down to the road — which stood since 1864 — to the then new site, which served generations of pupils for the past 54 years.

Principal Annette Dineen was visibly excited with the new building and facilities when we visited earlier this week.

“I can’t believe we’re here. It’s been nine years almost to the week since part of the roof blew off the old school during Storm Darwin. The children couldn’t believe it when they saw the new school as they hadn’t been up here yet. Some of the sixth class pupils said they thought they’d get lost!” said Annette.

The single-storey building has three SET rooms, eight classrooms, a large school hall, a soft-surface school yard at the back, offices and a basketball court out the front.

The entrance is also well laid out to allow parents to loop around when dropping and collecting the children.

Another nice touch has Annette naming each of the classrooms after townlands in the local area — Gurrane, Currovough, Killeen, Lisanearla, Dromtacker, Leith, Doon and Lisloose.

It’s been a long time coming but Listellick finally has the school pupils and staff deserve. Scroll down for photos…
