THE assembly hall at Moyderwell Mercy Primary School was filled with music on Wednesday as the school held a concert to showcase the talents of their young musicians taking part in their music programme.

Students played a wide range of pieces, from traditional to classical, during the event which was attended by their families.

“It started off some years ago as the ‘Colour My Strings’ project where we gave a free year of violin tuition to students,” explained Principal of the school Moira Quinlan.

“The programme starts with first class and it involves development of concentration, neurological development and self-discipline apart from the musical aspect. Those who like it carry on and it’s subsidised for the second year. Some of the pupils are now up to fifth class and have carried it on,” said Ms Quinlan.

“We have a great music teacher who comes in, Lucy Tanner, while Máire Jones, the Deputy Principal co-ordinates the programme with the co-operation of teachers and SNAs. It’s a real team effort.

“Last year we started another group for children interested in keyboards called ‘Tickle My Keys’ which has been a great success and just this January, the ‘Tradshed’ was founded with Máire Jones’ husband John coming in and volunteering to teach children trad music skills on Friday evenings,” she added.

The music programme, which now involves almost 100 pupils,  has also increased the children’s confidence.

“A project like this brings so much more than music for the children,” said Máire Jones. “For some pupils today, to stand there today and play solo takes an enormous amount of confidence.”

So with three different music teaching sessions going on, the children at Moyderwell Mercy are really progressing in their musical education and are also hitting the right notes in their social and personal development. Scroll down for photos…
