SCOIL Nuachabháil and Flemby NS both received tricolours from the army to mark the 100 year commemoration of the 1916 rising next year.

Gunner Sean Murphy and Lieutenant Denis Sheahan of the Irish Army, delivered tricolurs and a copy of the proclamation of independence to pupils from both school.

Over the next number of months, members of the Defence Forces will distribute a handmade Tricolour and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic to more than 3,000 national schools across Ireland.

While at the schools Lt Denis Sheahan, spoke to the children about the history and importance of our national flag.

He was particularly impressed with one Flemby pupil who was the first child out of 30 schools they had visited who could tell them the name of the man who designed of the flag.

“It’s great to get out and do something we don’t normally do and see all the schools,” said Gunner Sean Murphy.

“The children are definitely prepared before we come and it’s great that they’re learning about what’s going on next year and what it means to everyone.” said Gnr Murphy

At Scoil Nuachabháil, pupils welcomed the two army men with a guard of honour with each of the 150 or so school children waving a tricolour.

The kids got a chance to quiz the two men about the army and the history of the nation. Questions ranged from “where do you keep the guns?” to “are your uniforms itchy?”

To round off the visit, the proclamation was read out followed by a rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann.
