LOVE Literature week 2017 is currently underway at Presentation Secondary school Tralee which is all about promoting the arts in the school.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Feisty Females in Literature”. The inspiration for this week’s events is the poem “Phenomenal Woman. That’s me” by Poet Maya Angelo.

All students heard a recording of the poet reading her poem on Monday which brought lots of smiles to students’ faces.

English teachers Norma Foley and Joanne Keane O’Flynn coordinated this week’s activities, which are very diverse and range from poetry and creative writing workshops to artistic displays.

There are numerous competitions for six word stories, poetry, Tweets and more. Transition Year Students had a workshop on Monday with Steve Murray – the high-octane, dynamic, world famous Poetry Slammer.

The Gala presentation of prizes for Poetry and Literature competitions with internationally renowned author Róisín Meaney was held on Tuesday.

Second years were involved with a workshop with Rhona Tarrant from RTE who produces the Marion Finucane show.

Transition Years had workshops with Máire Holmes, writer in Residence for Kerry County Council, and Róisín Meaney on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the students were excited to dress up for Character Day, with a parade and prizes at lunch time. Kerry poet, Gabriel Fitzmaurice returned to meet, greet and tweet with First year students on Thursday.

First year and Transition Year students will finish off the week with a viewing of “Sing” at Tralee Omniplex on Friday afternoon.

The Love Lit week provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage with different aspects of creative writing and to meet with and hear the experiences of “real-life” authors. Scroll down for photos…
