OVER 500 First Year students from seven Kerry ETB schools and two Voluntary schools took part in the annual orienteering interschool event in Ballyseedy Woods on Tuesday this week.

Students from Colaiste Gleann Lí Tralee, Presentation Convent Tralee and Causeway Comprehensive School took with schools from further afield, Colaiste na Sceilge Cahirsiveen, Colaiste na Riochta Listowel, Killarney Community College, Castleisland Community College, Killorglin Community College and the Presentation Convent Listowel.

Some 250 teams in all enjoyed a wonderful day’s orienteering expertly organised by Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre.

First Year students participate in this event every year after completing a six week module in Orienteering as part of the Junior Cycle Physical Education Curriculum taught by qualified Physical Education teachers.

On Tuesday the students enjoyed testing their orienteering skills, searching for over 23 markers (dibbers) that were laid out by the Cappanalea team throughout the woods, in the early hours of the morning. The weather was kind and a great time was had by all.
