WITH the school year almost at an end, it was time to honour the achievements of Mercy Mounthawk students at their annual awards on Tuesday evening.

For the first time since 2019, families could once again gather in the Sports Hall with the students, who received awards for academic, sporting, artistic, cultural and civic skills.

Deputy Principal, Pat Fleming hosted the event.

“This was a really special one for us as it is the first one since the pandemic and our first live and in-person event of this size in over 2 years,” he said.

“As well as that, one of the positives that came from the pandemic is the development of in-house skills and we were able to broadcast the event live to those at home. So, as well as the 500 people in the hall on the night, we had over 3,000 clicks on our broadcast link which was great to see.”

Awards were given to students under multiple categories such as Academic Excellence, Diligence and School Spirit as well as awards in various subject and extra-curricular areas.

“Some awards worth mention are the Student Choice award which went to Cathy Palmer to tremendous applause, and the sports awards which went to Clodagh Murry (Kerry minor football and basketball) and Joey Nagle (Kerry U20 player),” continued Mr Fleming.

“We then have a ‘big 4’ set of awards which have the most prestige. Joey Nagle won again there getting the CEIST award recognising that, not only is he a top-drawer sportsman, but he is also a humble and thoughtful young man.

The Board of Management Award went to Jack Dakissia and Emily O’Brien for their years of positive interaction with all aspects of their school life.

The Principal’s Award and the Catherine McAuley Award were presented by John O’Roarke School Principal and these went to Hugh Emerson and Judith Waugh. They have been our Head Boy and Girl for the past year and their activity in the school community was a huge factor in keeping school life going during the lock-downs,” he added.

In total over 200 students were recognised for their achievements over the year.

Mr Fleming said; “When you consider what these young people have had to get through in terms of their education over recent years, it is heartening to see how many have still managed to impress and indeed, excel in so many aspects of life.  We congratulate all of those who got awards on the night and also those others who were nominated. They can reflect on a year well done and push on from here into the future.”
