MARTIN Luther, St Brendan and Audrey Hepburn were rubbing shoulders in Mercy Mounthawk on Thursday as the school put on a number of events for History Week.
“It’s been a great week and a very busy one,” said Noreen Somers of the history department in the school when we called.
“There was a talk to first years from Claudia Kohler from Kerry County Museum about the Middle Ages and we had students dress up as figures from history today. During the week we has a 3D model competition, a World War 1 exhibition, a table quiz, and TY students are going to Listowel for a screening of ‘Condemned To Remember’ about the Holocaust,” said Ms Somers.

There was also a planting of crocuses in memory of children who died in the Holocaust by third year students, as teacher Fionnuala Casey explained.
“As part of the Junior Cert, the students are reading a book called ‘Once’ and they really took to it. They really connected with the characters in the book and thought it would be a lovely thing to do. The flowers were be planted in the shape of the star of David and should bloom by the beginning of February.”

A bit odd.
Females dressing as historical males, I don’t see any males dressed as historical females – why the need for the gender bending. Not so historically correct if the gender of the historical figure is not recognised?
I know historically, males dressed as females on stage and white people depicted themselves as black by applying black or brown shoe polish to their skin – not good.
