IT was a case of celebrations all around today as local athletes returned from the ‘International Childrens Games’ that was held in Holland over the past week.
They brought with them a fantastic total of ten medals as they returned home to a fine reception from parents and friends who had bravely battled the elements to greet them at Casement Station on Monday.
They had travelled out from Cork on June 21 where they spent two days settling in and seeing the sights before they travelled to the Games Village in Alkmaar Noord on Wednesday, June 24 to participate in the tournament.
This was the 11th consecutive games that Tralee has participated in and it proved a highly successful year as the soccer and judo teams took home the plaudits and the medals.
“We’re delighted. There were eight silver medals and two bronze medals for the judo and soccer teams. While our performances on the pitch were excellent, it was the support off the pitch that was even better. They treated us absolutely fantastically,” said Mike Culloty, Chairman of the Tralee International Childrens Games speaking to TraleeToday.ie.
Parents and friends proudly beamed as the athletes posed for the group photo, safe in the knowledge that they had a great support network behind them for their future sporting exploits.
