THE Shooters Club Summer League ran for six weeks throughout the summer with over 60 youngsters taking part and the finals took place on Tuesday evening.

Run by Fergal O’Sullivan of Tralee Warriors/St Brendan’s Basketball Club, everyone showed great enthusiasm in the games and skills to try and improve their own skill set.

Weeks one and two were used as skill sessions to get the kids ready for summer league games. Following this the kids were split into four teams — Bulls, Celtics, Lakers and Warriors.

Every Tuesday the kids — aged between 6 and 12 — played games for two hours. Head Coach Fergal O’Sullivan started the shooters club with the hope of keeping the kids interested in basketball over the summer months on the back of Tralee Warriors’ Superleague success.

Players were drawn from all the clubs around the Tralee area and Fergal was helped out with coaches Steve O’Callaghan, Ryan Leonard, Gary Murphy and Aisling O’Mahony.

The Summer League came to a conclusion with Celtics v Bulls and Warriors v Lakers in Semi Finals.

In the girls semi-final the Celtics and Lakers proved too strong for their opponents. In the final the Lakers cruised to an early lead and despite a great fight back from the Celtics were just too strong and and ran out 20-12 winners.

The boys’ side of things proved to be very competitive. All players showed great determination to earn their place in the final.

The Bulls played with great team work and oversaw the Celtics in the first semi-final while the Warriors had a hard earned victory over a gutsy Lakers.

The final was a tightly contested affair with the teams level at half time. Fighting for every rebound and loose ball the game remained tied with just two mins remaining.

The only difference in the end were a couple of big shots from the Warriors, which the Bulls just couldn’t match and the Warriors finished 24-20 winners.

Fergal hopes to build on this Summer League and expand in age groups next summer. For now it’s back to business for the home clubs as teams get ready for the coming season. Scroll down for some photos from the league…
