TRALEE Credit Union Ltd reached a milestone last Sunday when it officially turned 50.
To kick start their 50th year celebrations St. John’s Church in Tralee dedicated the 12 noon Sunday Mass to Tralee Credit Union’s former and current voluntary board of directors in Tralee, Tralee CIE, Castleisland and Killorglin.
Following the mass The Grand Hotel formed the backdrop for a reunion of the many directors, retired and present staff and family members of the founding fathers.
On Sunday, February 18, 1968 Tralee Credit Union opened its doors in the T.C.L.S Building in Day Place, thanks to the generosity of St Vincent de Paul who owned the building. Tralee Credit Union was assisted by Tralee CIE Credit Union which had formed the year before.

Their vision was to give everyone throughout Tralee access to credit and this remains the ethos of the credit union 50 years later.
Over the years Tralee Credit Union’s common bond has expanded throughout Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. Today with over 43,000 members it is the fifth largest community based credit union in Ireland. The orginal £50 has now grown to €220 million.
Pa Laide, CEO Tralee Credit Union said; “We were very thankful to St. John’s Church as they honoured Tralee Credit Union’s 50th Anniversary by dedicating their 12 noon Sunday Mass to our founding fathers and over 120 directors and the volunteers who have helped Tralee Credit Union down through the years in the spirit of co-operation.
“During the mass Fr. Bernard Healy reflected on our heritage, volunteerism, community spirit and our credit union ethos and value of “people helping people” that by working together people can achieve far more together than individually on their own. We were delighted with the turn out and it was a great afternoon for many former directors to catch up and reminisce about Tralee Credit Union down through the years. We will continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary with a range of activities and events in our local communities and we look foward to our name change at Easter,” said Mr Laide.
