TRALEE Municipal District of Kerry County Council held the second civic reception in three years for Garveys Tralee Warriors after their fantastic achievements on the court this season.

Players, coaching staff and sponsors gathered with councillors and Tralee MD staff at The Rose Hotel on Monday evening to celebrate the Super League and National Cup double.

All at Warriors are still on a high after Saturday night’s win in Dublin and they were feted by Deputy Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, who spoke of the boost it has given to the sport in the town.

“Tonight is a celebration of a wonderful Super League and cup double, a first for any basketball team in Kerry. Kerry is a sporting county as we all know, but in my eyes Tralee is not only the capital town, but it’s also the sporting capital,” said Cllr Sheehy.

“Basketball has always been to the fore in that regard. Diggins, Carey, Burrows, Teahan, Donaghy and O’Sullivan are all names that roll off the tongue when glories of past and present are discussed. But there’s another name that should also be mentioned that is synonymous with basketball in the town and that is the Garvey Group, the Warriors main sponsor and they have always been great supporters of sport in the county.”

Chairperson of Garveys Tralee Warriors, Cllr Terry O’Brien, also thanked Garvey Group and all the sponsors for their support over the years.┬áHe said the players have been great ambassadors for the town and for the sport of basketball.

He also paid tribute to the supporters, whom he described as the best in the country, the coaching staff and everyone involved in the club for making the year such a success.

Head Coach John Dowling thanked all the players and the coaching staff for their time and dedication and the committee who ensure everything runs smoothly off the court.

“We are the best looked after team in the country. Everything is taken care of. All we have to do is coach and we don’t have to worry about anything else. That’s a huge thing that does not happen in every other club,” he said.

He also paid special tribute to Cllr Terry O’Brien. “You can’t put into words what Terry O’Brien has done for this town on and off the court,” he said.

Team captain Fergal O’Sullivan thanked all involved in the club, the Council for holding the Civic Reception and Garvey Group and the rest of the sponsors for their support.

“We achieved what no other team in the county has with the league and cup double. While the medals and the trophies are great, it’s the memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives,” said Fergal. Scroll down for photos…
